Agami Heron upgraded in the IUCN red list

In 2012, the IUCN upgraded the Agami Heron (Agamia agami) from the category of Least Concern to that of Vulnerable: “Based on a model of future deforestation in the Amazon basin, and the bird’s susceptibility to hunting pressures, it is thought that the population of this species will decline rapidly over the next three generations, and it has therefore been upgraded to the category of Vulnerable.”

To clarify the category definitions:

“A taxon is of Least Concern when it has been evaluated against a range of standardized criteria and does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable or Near Threatened. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.”

“A taxon is Vulnerable when the best available evidence indicates that it meets any of the criteria A to E for Vulnerable, and it is therefore considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.”
