Meet the ’SOS Papangue’ team on La Réunion
The Réunion Harrier, or ’Papangue’ in Creole, is the only endemic raptor that breeds on the island of La Réunion. It is a species under threat, classed as ’Endangered’ in the national Red List, that can suffer from secondary poisoning after having consumed rats. This poisoning manifests itself in internal bleeding, but can be treated quickly by a vet. To increase the survival chances of the birds, SEOR have formed a team of volunteers – ’la Brigade SOS Papangue’ – who keep an eye out for any harriers that might be showing signs of sickness.

Le Busard de Maillard, ou Papangue en créole, est la seule espèce de rapace endémique et nicheuse de l’île de la Réunion. C’est une espèce menacée, évaluée "En danger" selon la Liste rouge nationale, qui peut être victime d’empoisonnement secondaire en se nourrissant de rats. Cet empoisonnement se traduit par des hémorragies internes qui doivent être soignés rapidement par un vétérinaire. Pour augmenter les chances de survie du Papangue, la SEOR a créé la Brigade SOS Papangue constituée de bénévoles qui surveillent les oiseaux et identifient les individus malades.
