The Savannahs Project coordinated by GEPOG forges ahead!

The 5th meeting of the Monitoring Committee for the Savannahs Project took place on the 11th December last. Starting in mid-2011, the project is both multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary. Coordinated by GEPOG, it involves several other organisations and specialists: the Conservatoire du Littoral, the Communes of Sinnamary and Iracoubo, DEAL-Guyane, the Région-Guyane, the Association SEPANGUY, the Maison de la Nature of Sinnamary, PNRG, ONF, the Lycée Agricole of Matiti and the University of the Antilles and French Guiana.

The committee meets regularly twice a year, with an anthropologist, botanists, ecologists, farmers, local political representatives, land managers and tourist guides all meeting round the same table. The aim is to obtain an update on progress to date, to check the results of past actions and to define those for the future.

Following the 11th December meeting, several new developments were launched: the production of a booklet about the savannahs and the coastal centre, already in hand with Sylvétude (research department of the ONF), a newsletter and a future website about the project, as well as a working group which will look into the specific question of how the areas can be developed from the start of 2014 onwards.
