At the moment, there is very little data on the abiotic (i.e. non-living) characteristics of the habitat of the White-breasted Thrasher, a species endemic to the Lesser Antilles and globally threatened.
To determine the characteristics of the habitat better, teams from Life+ Cap DOM on Martinique are using ’capteurs Eko’ (dataloggers), innovatory tools which, from observations of the bird’s actions, enable researchers to determine the abiotic factors of its surroundings. Used in conjunction with ’Song Meters’, they help to characterise and locate the remaining hotspots where the species lives.
In due course, this method should also be able to be used in areas where similar problems occur, so that other threatened species may also be protected!
