Marc Salamolard, the officer responsible for Fauna at the Réunion National Park, recounts the history of Réunion’s avifauna, from the first species brought to this volcanic island by marine currents, winds and storms to the human colonisers who brought new predators such as pigs and rats which have had such a strong impact on this fragile ecosystem. Nearly 18 bird species became extinct during the first hundred years since humans arrived on the island, and Marc Salamolard looks back over the period since that time.
